This is a master plan project collaborated among 5 Master students, aiming to question the regeneration of South Collyhurst as part of the Northern gateway development (see the Strategic Regeneration Framework: http://northerngatewaymanchester.co.uk/framework/).
This project is also a study on the negotiation between stakeholders, ie, existing community(who facing the problem of displacement), Far East Consortium(profit-oriented developer), Northwards Housing(affordable housing provision), new community and the Manchester City Council(interested in provision to meet the local housing demands). According to the research in the Northern gateway project, the existing community who has lost 'spatial abilities' adopts place attachment as coping strategies(including numbers of elderly). Moreover, the physical barriers such as the Arches decrease comfort of circulation, increasing the distance by requiring to be walked around. Noise from railway disturbs everyday life. In face of provision of new amenities as part of new development, the existing communities are prone to not feel a part of the new place and become isolated. However, only approximately 20% of housing is to be affordable. |
