The Silk Centre Facade
The masterplan of the project is an industrial park with a silk company in Shenzhen as our client. Despite being a small part of the overall masterplan, the sale centre is the centre of focus in the park. The challenge of the project is to use architecture to illustrate the delicate, tactile quality.
Initially, the facade is designed to use curved aluminium tube to simulate silk stretched by silk making machine. However, except for the cost of the aluminium tube, the overall texture seems losing the fine and smooth feature of silk. The size and thickness of the tube made limits to the smoothness of the texture. It is very hard to control, too. (For such small scale buiding)As a result, we need to figure out an other constructing method that can represent silk making process better.

According to the project client, what they want is a to represent silk making process. However, they did not intend to spend a big cost on this. In order to fullfill client’s requirements, perforated plate is the best material. For one thing is that we can play with holes to form a pattern with fixed costs. For another, speaking of difficulty of construction, its easier for us to control the sense of being fine and smooth through countless holes on it.
